Gamification
Overview
This gamified eLearning project was designed to teach students the importance of Netiquettes—proper online behavior—through interactive gameplay. Through an engaging storyline, learners progress by applying Netiquette rules in real-life scenarios, unlocking new levels after successfully completing each quiz.
I developed this prototype based on principles from The Art of Serious Game Design facilitator guide, created by the Digital Education Strategies (DES) team at Ryerson University's G. Raymond Chang School. These principles guided the design and structure of the game to ensure it was both educational and engaging.
Target Audience
Students studying Property, Copyright, & Ethics and individuals interested in learning about proper online behavior.
Key Contributions
Created visual designs using Canva that aligned with the learning objectives and maintained student engagement.
Developed storyboards to structure the lesson flow, ensuring that the learning path was both logical and engaging.
Incorporated AODA standards to ensure accessibility for all learners.
Challenges and Approach
Challenges
Teaching Netiquettes as a concept is often considered dull and can feel disconnected from learners’ personal experiences. Traditional methods of teaching this subject tend to lack engagement and fail to motivate learners.

Approach
To address this, I gamified the learning process by integrating interactive quizzes and real-world digital etiquette scenarios into the lesson. The learning path was designed as a series of levels, with learners unlocking new stages only after successfully passing the quizzes. This created a sense of accomplishment and kept learners motivated to progress.
Design Process
Content Research
I gathered information on digital etiquette, tailoring scenarios to reflect the online behaviors learners are most likely to encounter.

Storyboarding
Developed a storyboard outlining the flow of the module, ensuring that each lesson was logically connected to the next and the gameplay progressed smoothly.

Visual Design
Using Canva, I designed characters, backgrounds, and other visual elements that made the content engaging.
Development
Created the module in Articulate Storyline 360, using layers and triggers to deliver interactive elements such as quizzes and feedback for learners.
Theoretical Foundation
I developed this prototype based on principles from The Art of Serious Game Design facilitator guide, created by the Digital Education Strategies (DES) team at Ryerson University's G. Raymond Chang School. These principles guided the design and structure of the game to ensure it was both educational and engaging.

Lessons Learned
Gamification Boosts Engagement
Incorporating game elements like progression and rewards into eLearning modules increased learner motivation and engagement.

Real-World Context
Tying lessons to situations learners face daily made the material more relatable and helped reinforce their understanding of Netiquette principles.

Progressive Difficulty Works
Gradually increasing the complexity of the challenges helps sustain engagement while building confidence in learners without overwhelming them.
