Rumie Learn
Project Overview
In my role as a Volunteer Learning Designer at Rumie, I contributed to the creation of "Bytes," concise microlearning resources designed to help young adults (16–24) develop essential life and soft skills. These learners are often navigating "adulting" challenges like career readiness, financial literacy, and personal development.
Target Audience
Young adults aged 16–24 who are comfortable with technology and actively seeking actionable advice on building key life skills.
Key Contributions
Content Research

Conducted thorough research into real-world challenges faced by young adults to ensure content was relevant, practical, and immediately applicable.
Instructional Design

Designed content that was learner-centric, focusing on breaking down complex life skills into digestible, engaging "Bytes."
eLearning Development

Used Rumie’s browser-based content editor to create microlearning courses that are user-friendly and responsive across devices.
Challenges and Approach

Challenge
Many young adults are unprepared for the transition into adulthood and may lack critical skills for career and personal success. Given the short attention span of today’s learners, delivering impactful learning in bite-sized formats was key.

Approach
I tackled this by focusing on essential, practical skills such as career readiness and time management. My design philosophy revolved around creating engaging, concise content with clear, actionable outcomes. Each Byte was structured to guide learners through real-world scenarios, making the learning experience more relatable and practical.
Design Process
Research & Analysis
I started by selecting a Byte topic from a range of predefined learning objectives provided by Rumie, which cover wide categories like career development and life skills. After choosing a relevant objective, I conducted in-depth research to ensure the content aligned with the needs of young adults. I gathered insights from credible sources and user feedback to ensure the content was relevant.

Instructional Strategy
With the learners’ needs in mind, I developed a content structure that emphasized clarity and direct application. This involved simplifying complex concepts into short, manageable learning chunks that would be easy to engage with on-the-go.

Development & Collaboration
Using Rumie’s browser-based platform, I translated my instructional designs into interactive Bytes. I also provided constructive feedback to my peers to improve the overall quality of our team's outputs, while actively incorporating their suggestions into my own work.
Impact and Results
In just three months, my authored Bytes reached over 200 learners globally. The high engagement rate demonstrated the effectiveness of microlearning in delivering essential skills to young adults in a user-friendly format.
Lessons Learned
Collaboration & Feedback
Working with a team of Learning Designers taught me the value of constructive feedback and continuous improvement. By exchanging ideas, I was able to refine my content and learn from others' expertise.

Designing for Engagement
Through this project, I learned how to create learning experiences that keep learners engaged despite the briefness of the content. I focused on ensuring that each interaction was meaningful and contributed to a clear learning outcome.

Microlearning as a Solution
The success of this project confirmed that microlearning is an effective way to teach life skills, especially when designed for a tech-savvy, young audience.
