Beyond the basics: Bloom’s Taxonomy

Since I had been a teacher in India for three years and had two teaching qualifications, I had familiarity with educational models, such as Bloom's Taxonomy, when I started the E-learning Design and Training Development course at Lambton College, Sarnia. However, as I progressed through the course, I realized that my knowledge of Bloom's Taxonomy and its complex applications in both traditional and virtual classroom settings had increased significantly. This model aims to help educators better understand and evaluate the different types of complex mental skills needed for effective learning (Cherry,2023).

Although I had previously included Bloom's Taxonomy in my methods of teaching, the course provided me with a more holistic viewpoint. The experience was not only a review but rather an in-depth examination that revealed previously unacknowledged aspects of Bloom's Taxonomy, which I had not completely understood in my prior teaching encounters.

I had to rethink how I used Bloom's Taxonomy because I had to use it so often in my assignments. The "Blooms and Gardener Matrix" task from Prof. Ruth Drewitt's Evaluating Learning class really pushed me to understand things deeply. This work made me think about different ways to teach and create learning opportunities that fit the needs of each student. It made me want to learn more about what teaching and learning are truly all about.

The course emphasized the taxonomy's function as more than just a hierarchical structure of cognitive processes. It showed how Bloom's Taxonomy can be used strategically and on purpose in lesson planning and teaching design. This required more than just knowing about the taxonomy's levels; it also required careful thought about how each level could be used to improve learning outcomes.
